Enjoy The Holidays But Stay Safe

It's the holiday season, time for tinsel, decorations, gatherings around the fire, entertaining by candlelight, and lots of action in the kitchen preparing special food and treats. Even though it's the season of giving and fun, you still need to think about safety.

Here are some safety tips from the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs.

1. If you have a real Christmas tree water it daily. If you don't the tree can become dry and can catch on fire really easily. Keep anything flammable item away from the tree, such as candles, and remove clutter such as paper and boxes as soon as you can.

2. Have Working Smoke Alarms - Make sure you have a full functioning Smoke Detector in your home. Do a check to see if the batteries are charged, if not replace them ASAP. If your alarm is hard-wired, run a service check to make sure it works.

3. Watch What You're Cooking! Holiday entertaining can be chaotic in the kitchen, so be sure to watch what is around your stove. Make sure your stove burners are clear of contact with any combustibles. You'd be surprised at how frequently boxes or bags of food are placed on the stove and then the wrong burner is turned on. Keep an eye on the stove and oven to make sure nothing overheats or catches on fire. Do you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen? A good idea is to keep one under the kitchen sink ready if you need it.

Another fire prevention tip is make sure that your dryer ventilation system is clean and unblocked because that is another ways that house fires can start. If the vent gets blocked then it can cause a fire in your laundry room.
